Understanding Proportions and Ratios

An aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image, video, or display container. Expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, such as 16:9 or 4:3.

Standard Aspect Ratios in Digital Media

  • 16:9 (1.78:1): The standard for YouTube, TV, and monitors (1920x1080).
  • 9:16 (0.56:1): Vertical video for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts (1080x1920).
  • 1:1 (1.00:1): Square avatars and Instagram posts (1080x1080).
  • 4:3 (1.33:1): Classic photography and tablets.
  • 21:9 (2.33:1): Ultrawide cinematic formats.

Native CSS aspect-ratio Property

In modern CSS, specify aspect-ratio: 16 / 9 directly on containers to prevent Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) before images or videos load.
